At nursery, children do not only learn indoors. They also learn outside, by playing, observing and discovering their environment.
At Les Petits Tournesols, we make the most of outdoor time whenever the weather and organisation allow it. The garden, walks, water play and small outings are simple moments that help children grow.
The garden, a place for play and discovery
The garden is an important part of the children’s day. They find the slide, small vehicles, balls and games they enjoy.
By playing outside, children develop balance, coordination and confidence. They also learn to wait their turn, share and respect others.
Water play in summer
When it is warm, small pools are set up to the children’s delight. Water lets them discover new sensations: freshness, splashing, touch and movement.
These moments are always organised in an adapted setting and under the team’s supervision.
Walks and outings around the nursery
Regularly, the children go for walks around the nursery. Depending on their age and abilities, some walk, while the youngest can enjoy the outing in large strollers.
These walks help children observe what surrounds them: trees, seasons, paths, houses, animals and people they meet. They are also an opportunity to learn the first safety rules: staying with the group, listening to instructions and waiting before crossing.
Learning through village life
During outings, children also discover village life. During one outing, for example, they met the grocer with his small van. The team was able to buy fresh bread, which was used for breakfast the next morning.
These simple situations are valuable. They show children that learning also happens in everyday life: seeing, speaking, greeting, waiting, choosing and understanding what is happening around them.
Julie’s view
Julie, educator for 4 years in Itzig
“What I observe is that children open up differently outside. Those who walk are focused, responsible and proud. Even the youngest children in the pushchairs are very attentive: they look, point and react. They hear Luxembourgish in real life, with the grocer or the neighbours.”
Julie, educator for 4 years at Les Petits Tournesols Itzig nursery
Playing outside is also learning
Outdoor play is not a secondary moment. It is part of development. Children move, breathe, observe, ask questions, try, start again and discover the world with their whole body. Outdoor moments help children develop motor skills, language, autonomy and curiosity.
At Les Petits Tournesols, we want these moments to remain simple, safe and regular. Outdoors is a learning space like any other, with more sky, more movement and many small discoveries.
