Short answer: at nursery, children move, explore and learn. Small bumps can happen. The team’s role is to prevent avoidable risks, keep the child safe, observe the situation and inform parents when needed.
Zero risk does not exist in a place where young children live, play and learn. What matters is an age-appropriate setting, attentive professionals, a calm response and transparent communication with families.
Small bumps are part of learning
A young child discovers the world through their body. They learn to walk, run, climb, share, wait their turn and express emotions. A small fall, scratch, bump or bite between children can happen even in a supervised environment.
This does not mean that a bump is unimportant. Every situation deserves attention, comfort and observation. The child needs to be seen, heard, reassured and supported.
Preventing without stopping children from growing
Nursery safety is not about stopping children from moving. It is about offering a setting adapted to their age, development and needs. Spaces, toys, transitions, meals, garden time and rest periods are organised to reduce avoidable risks.
A safe environment is not an environment without movement. It is a place where children can explore, sometimes stumble, then be supported to understand, regain confidence and continue learning.
What happens when a child gets hurt?
When a child gets hurt, the team first makes sure they are safe, observes what happened and assesses their general condition. Any simple care remains adapted to the situation, the team’s competences and internal procedures.
The educators are trained in first aid by Vitalmed. They respond calmly and attentively, without replacing a doctor. If there is any doubt or a more serious situation, parents are contacted and emergency services may be called.
Transparent communication with parents
Trust relies on transparency. When a situation requires information or a shared decision, the nursery prioritises a phone call with parents to explain the facts, review the child’s condition and decide together what should happen next if needed.
Important events are recorded in the nursery app so parents can find useful information about what happened.
First aid, medicines and medical limits
The teams may carry out simple actions adapted to the situation: reassuring the child, observing their condition, using a cold pack, applying a plaster or providing simple local care according to internal authorisations.
For any specific treatment, especially prescribed medication, the nursery requires a named medical document. Educators support and reassure the child within their competences, but they do not replace a healthcare professional.
Luxembourg framework and specific steps
Les Petits Tournesols are approved education and care services in Luxembourg. Childcare takes place within a legal, regulatory and educational framework that sets requirements for approval, supervision, quality and well-being.
When the situation requires it in an extracurricular context, an accident declaration may also be made to AAA Luxembourg, in line with the steps provided for school or extracurricular accidents.
A first-aid kit is available on each floor and is checked annually.
What parents can remember
A serious nursery is not one that promises nothing will ever happen. It is one that prevents risks, supervises children, observes carefully, responds professionally and communicates clearly with families.
